The division, the last to arrive in Vietnam, landed at Vung Tao and moved to Bear Cat where it established its headquarters. They arrived in December of 1966, and operated in both III and IV Corps. Initially headquartered at Bear Cat in Bien Hoa Province, it began initial clearing operations in the Delta province of Dinh Toung. By 1968, its headquarters would relocate to Dong Tam, near My Tho in Dinh Toung Province. In III Corps, the division operated in Phouc Tuy, Bien Hoa, Long An, and Long Khanh Provinces primarily. In IV Corps the division operated primarily throughout the northern delta provinces of Dinh Tuong, Kien Hao, Phong Dinh, Ba Xuyen, and Kien Toung. Under a series of operations code-named Akron, the 1st Brigade operating in Bien Hoa, Long Khanh and Phouc Tuy conducted search and destroy operations disrupting build-ups of VC forces of the 274th Regiment and their supply bases and tunnels west of Saigon. The division’s 2nd Brigade was the Army component of the Mobile Riverine Force. After initial on-the-job-training operations in the Rung Sat Special Zone, the brigade operated alongside Naval Task Force 117, which supplied and operated the vessels necessary to conduct Amphibious assaults throughout IV Corps. The 9th Infantry Division began withdrawing in summer 1969, leaving its 3rd Brigade behind as a separate unit (under command of 25th Infantry Division) until October 1970. |
