The division was activated on 15th of May, 1943 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. It was moved to Winchester, England for additional training prior to movement to Europe.
Landing at Le Havre the division embarked in January 1945 and moved to relieve the 99th Infantry Division at Montenau, Belgium facing the Siegfried Line. The division attacked between Honningen and Gescheid taking Buschem, Dickerscheid, Resscheid, and Oberreifferscheid. The Division crossed the Rhine on the Victor Bridge at Niederbreisig and across Germany onto Leipzig and joining hands with the Soviet Army at Torgau on the Elbe River on 24 April, 1945.
