Major Operations

The first elements of the Brigade arrived at Quang Tri, in the northern part of I Corps in July of 1968.  Infantry and Armor elements were provided by the 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry; 1st Battalion 61st Infantry; and  the 1st Battalion 77th Armor.

During its time in Vietnam it was assigned under the operational control of the 3rd Marine Division with responsibility for Armor/Mechanized infantry support of Marines  in I Corps.  Elements of the Brigade, the 77th Armor, first saw action in Con Thien working with members of the 1st Marine Division to halt NVA infiltration through the DMZ.  In Operation Rich, October of 1968, members of the Brigade moved into the DMZ to reduce the impact of these incursions

In early 1969 the Brigade participated as part of operation Remagen to disrupt supply operations of the NVA along the Laotian Border where they were funneling supplies into the Southern portion of the Corps Tactical Zone.  The effectiveness of this operation forced the North Vietnamese to move their supply routes.  

The Brigades firepower and mobility added “punch” to the operations conducted by the Marine in I Corps along QL9 where the Brigade opened up roads to the Laotian border from Fire Support Bases along the major East-West Highway in the northern portion of South Vietnam.

By October of 1969 Operation Control of the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division passed to XXIV Corps as Marines began stepping down in Vietnam.  In January of 1971 the Brigade provided support for Operation Lam Son 719. Attempting to destroy NVA supply lines in Laos the ARVN sent 20,000 troops into Laos along the shared border, the Brigade opened QL9 to the border and provided support for the  ARVN divisions from the Khe Sanh Plain.  The division redeployed to FT Carson, CO in Aug 71.
