Tropic Lightning division members were active in the Vietnam War as early as 1963 with helicopter crewmen being the first to arrive and later, engineers of the division taking part in the Cam Ranh Bay facilities. The division’s main area of operations were north and west of Saigon. Here the Tropic Lightning Division fought the NVA and Viet Cong in the Iron Triangle, Filhol Plantation, Boi Loi Woods, the Ho Bo Woods, War Zone C and into Cambodia during the 1970 limited incursion. Their they destroyed base camps and supported the ARVN units penetrating further into Cambodia in search of Central Office South Vietnam Headquarters. Throughout their area of operations MEDCAP teams from the division provided medical support to villagers. Teams consisting of U.S doctors and medics and ARVN nurses provided medical care to villagers while winning support for the ARVN government in formerly VC/PAVN controlled areas. Names such as Katum, Fire Support Base Keene, and The Iron Triangle were added to the division’s annals. The division was redeployed by April of 1971 to Hawaii. |
