   1st Marine Division in Korea, Framed

On 7 July, the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade was activated at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, California. The primary core of the ground element was the 5th Marines and the first elements of the Brigade landed at Pusan early in August, less than 2 months after the North Korean invasion.

 

By the 7th of August Marine ground were fighting the enemy at Chindong-ni, west of Pusan. The North Koreans were driven back with heavy losses, and the defense of the Pusan Perimeter was assured.

One month later the 1st Marine Division, under the Command of Major General Oliver Smith led an amphibious assault at Inchon.  From Inchon, the division fought the North Koreans around Seoul, the South Korean Capital.  In house to house fighting they took the capital city from the communists on Sept 27th, 1950.

 

On Oct 25th Chinese forces crossed the Yalu River and enter the war on the side of the North Koreans.  The Marines facing 8 Chinese divisions fought a strategic withdrawal from the area of the Chosin Reservoir.

For the remaining years of the war the US Marines of the 1st Marine Division and United Nations Forces fought a brutal war against the Communist Forces, the U.S. applying superior force and the Communist Chinese and North Koreans sacrificing wave after wave of troops along the center of the country.

 

The Korean War entered a armistice in July of 1953.
