The division saw action on all fronts of the Western European Theater. It landed as part of the Central Landing Force as part of Operation Torch. It landed in Sicily at Gela and fought its way toward Randazzo and Messina. It was among the first wave landing at Omaha Beach on Normandy on June 6, 1944 suffering almost 30% casualties. It fought across Northern France, stormed Aachen in Belgium and was one of the first divisions into Germany. After a brief rest it was rushed to help stem the German offensive near Bullingen, it what has become known as the Battle of the Bulge. Rushing across the Rhine at Remagen it then participated in the Ruhr pocket encirclement, It fought at Osterode and St Andreasburg in the Harz Mountains and was at Cheb in Czechoslovakia at wars end. |
