1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) Patch and History, Framed |

|
The division, the first to arrive in Vietnam, was the first to test and implement Airmobile tactics. Arriving in country in September, 1965, it was in action against the B-3 Front of the People’s Army of Vietnam (NVA) which consisted of the 32nd, 33rd, and 66th Regiments. The battle of LZ-X-Ray and later LZ-Albany (Battle of Ia Drang Valley) was the first major battle between the NVA and the US Army. It was not the last.
In I Corps the division responded to the Tet Offensive with heroic actions clearing Quang Tri City and the liberation of Hue fighting alongside members of the 1st Marine Division. Later, again with the Marines and ARVN troops, the 1st Air Cav fought to relieve the siege at Khe Sanh.
In Tay Ninh, Binh Long, and Binh Doung Provinces of III Corps they mounted assaults on NVA and VC forces staging for operations against the capital of Saigon. In IV Corps it coordinated with Naval Forces in operations against the Viet Cong. While leaving the 3rd Brigade as a separate unit in Vietnam, the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) redeployed to Fort Hood, Texas in April of 1971. |
