The 1st Brigade, including the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 327th and the 2nd Battalion of the 502nd arrived in Vietnam in July of 1965 as a separate brigade and operated from Phan Rang in II Corps until rejoining the Division in late 1967. In a series of operations, primarily in Binh Dinh Province, the 1st Brigade swept major enemy activity from the province. Operations such as Ramrod, Cactus, and Gibraltar worked to dramatically disrupt enemy activity north of An Khe. By the spring of 1967, the first Brigade was attached to Task Force Oregon in Chu Lai, supplementing Marine Forces in I Corps. By September of that year, the Task Force evolved into the 23rd Infantry Division (The Americal) and the 1st Brigade, 101st Division was ready to rejoin the rest of the 101st arriving from the United States. Until their redeployment to the U.S the 101st, now re-designated Airmobile, would participate in numerous offensive and pacification efforts in the western parts of I Corps. To a large part this was in the A Shau Valley, where during Operation Apache Snow, the Division fought a major battle against the 29th NVA Regiment preparing to move on Hue. It became known as the battle of Dong Ap Bia, aka “Hamburger Hill”. By March of 1972 the division redeployed to Fort Campbell, KY, the last American division to leave Vietnam. |
