The division was activated on the 15th of July, 1942 at Camp Swift, Texas.

 

The division disembarked at LeHavre France then moved to the line to replace the 5th Infantry Division near Norrey-leSur. The division entered combat at Villers, along the Moselle River in France.  The division took Metz earning the nickname, Iron men of Metz.  Subsequently it took Saarlautern breaking through the Siegfried Line.

|Redeployed to the Northern edge of the front near Krefeld the Division attacked across the Rhine taking Dortmun, Beckum and Hamm. The division participated in the Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe Campaign.

After security duties the division returned to the US on 29 June, 1945.  The division was under the command of Major General Harry L. Twaddle through out their service in the European Theater of Operations.
